Bangla Hunt,Pallab Ghosh:
Many of us have seen ‘Justice For Monika’ campaingn on Facebook. Infact, the news has become viral after the netizens have vented out their anger in the protest-post on this shameless incedent. Unfortunately, the national and regional media failed reportage on this incedent as they were dngrosed with news relating to elections, brick-bating, hatespeech and alegatons-counter allegations-counter allegations. Filthy catfights between Modi-Mamata are more important. Well, elections are important but not above people.
The shameless incedent has taken place in Purulia, West Bengal which incedentally was in news because Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was monitoring the cyclone ‘Fani’ but none had the news of this class 12 student abducted, gangraped and murdered.
Nothing much would have happened though, either the incedent would be called ‘choto ghotona’ (petty incedent) or ‘sajano ghotona’ (concocted incedent). Sounds harsh, but this is what we have seen in the past and is one of the predominant reasons why rapes, gangrapes, molestations and stalking are rising at a galloping rate in Bengal. From the infamous Park Street gangrape to Kamduni to Barasat…list is endless, we saw the incompetence of ruling patry.
According to prima facie evidences the girl was abducted, kept hostage at a local temple where she was shbjected to brutal gangrape for over a week before being murdered.
Monika Mahato, a class 12 student was staying with her uncle. On May she did not return after tutions. On May 10 the local police found a unidentified decomposed body without clothes from the jungle nearby. The family identified their daughter. The police working on various leads from her familyand friends have arrested two of her classmates – Arun Mahato and Abhiji Mahato. However, the investgating officer did not want to divulge details about the sad incedent.
There has been a severe resentment among the family members and locals over what they claim to be the incompetence of police which failed to locate the where abouts of Monika. However, the incedent has attracted political attentions as nothing goes unnoticed being the election time. Monika has found place in not only campaingn speeches but also on the wallings. Her family has decided to boycot the elections.
Finally, those who find the social media useless and ask stupid questions like – “why are we on social media” or “social media boom is unhealthy for society” etc. etc. Well, unless our mainstream media, journalists will talj of people’s issues and report people’s plight..till then social media and netizen desrve to be called journalists as they highlight such issues and start camoaingn like ‘Justice For Monika’…
