Massive fire engulphed the godown situated at Jagganath Ghat on Strand Road near Howrah Station, West Bengal. The fire broke out around 2 AM on Saturday and spread rapidly. Over 20 fire-tenders were rushed to the spot. However, no casualty has been reported till reports last received.
Disaster Management team and fire fighters have been trying their best to douse the flames since 2 AM. However, a portion of the building (roof) may fall at anytime.
The incedent once again has raised the question mark on the fire safety and security measures. The place has numerous godowns storing various inflamable materials like wood, plastic and paints. The city has learnt nothing from the devastating fire in the past at the Nandaram Market or the recent fire at Burrra Bazar.
West Bengal fire and starte emergencies minister Sujit Basu reached the spot and supervised the work.
Kolkata Traffic Police has isdued an advisory asking people to avoid the Strand Road and adjoining areas as it has been closed to traffic due to rescue operations.
The fire fighters have been trying to douse the flame at the time the story was being filed.
